Photography and Conservation

Land Acknowledgement
I’m David Sturge, a wildlife photographer and conservationist deeply connected to the landscapes and seascapes of Newfoundland and Labrador. I respectfully acknowledge that the land and waters I explore and photograph are the traditional territories of the Mi’kmaq, Innu, and Inuit peoples. These Nations have maintained profound relationships with these places for thousands of years and continue to do so today as caretakers of the natural world.
The wildlife I encounter and photograph are not mine to own, but beings I am privileged to witness. Their presence is a gift, one that comes with responsibility. I approach every subject with deep respect, guided by ethical practices that honour the lives I document. My goal is simple: to share their beauty in a way that fosters connection, awareness, and protection, for them and the land they call home.
Born Into Conservation
I was born in Labrador City, and from a young age, the wildness of the North shaped both my view of the world and the way I capture it through the lens. My camera has journeyed with me across the rugged cliffs of Newfoundland’s southern shore and deep into the remote reaches of Labrador’s north coast. More than a photographer, I am a conservationist, Park Ranger, Wildlife Guide, and Sea Captain. Each role has deepened my respect for nature and sharpened my storytelling.
In 2026 I was selected as a member of the CCPC (Canadian Conservation Photographers Collective) helping to move conservation and environmental protection initiatives forward across Canada and here in my home province through meaningful and impactful images. I also contribute content to the Nature Conservancy of Canada where I also serve as a Property Stewart. I also donate my work to Nature Canada and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society to help with educational and conservation projects and campaigns.
